We believe that within every person, there is creativity and mastery to develop. The outcome is resilient and abundant when you start with a strong foundation.

If you go out into the real world, you cannot miss seeing that the poor are poor not because they are untrained or illiterate but because they cannot retain the returns of their labor. They have no control over capital, and it is the ability to control capital that gives people the power to rise out of poverty.

CONNECT - Humanitarian Services

Our method starts with larger organisations or from connections through local networks. We first prioritise at risk families. Once we have made the connection we ask about pressing needs that are inhibiting their stability. In the dead of winter, emergency clothing, shoes and food were top priorities.

As the snow thawed, we were able to look further into the future to resolve issues that prevent sustained stability. An example is the investment for a washing machine that freed a mother from having to hand wash the clothes of the twelve people in the household. This simple investment allows her to be a bread-winner, making the following winter less of a struggle. We do not seek to solve all of their issues, but to remove major obstacles which keep them in poverty traps.

BUILD - Consulting Service

The Genesus Foundation works closely with entrepreneurs from many different backgrounds. Our desire is that through training, either on the job or in the classroom, we can establish a strong foundation as well as provide more independence to each individual. It is no small obstacle that refugee life is uncertain and unpredictable, yet with experience and wisdom we can foster leaders.

For example...

Genesus has been working closely with a cooperative of Syrian men and women displaced by the conflict. The earrings they design and make by hand are part of their effort to redefine their destiny. As they rebuild their lives in Istanbul through crafting earrings and learning new skills, Genesus takes them through the operations of running the venture to sustainably grow. Our chief focus is not to just structure the organisation but foster an environment that encourages entrepreneurship. Throughout our time with Drop Earrings Not Bombs, we have been greatly encouraged to see the fast pace of growth of these men and women. From designing and crafting new models to organising shipping logistics and production systems, Drop Earrings Not Bombs inspires the community around to dream bigger.

As the internal systems grow more and more, Genesus directed its attention towards outside sales; targeting wholesalers in Turkey and abroad. We conduct meetings and arrange contracts for the project to have sustained and stable business. Through the last several months, we have seen a dramatic change in the internal operations as well as an increase in demand for their product, both of which build a solid foundation for the future. Through this project, over 20 Syrians are more able to determine their own fate and be independent from the daily pressures of displacement.

You can find out more about and purchase their products at Drop Earrings Not Bomb's official site.

MENTOR - Development Service

The story of our first micro-business starts with the tragic but hopeful growth of two newlyweds. When Genesus was first introduced to the young couple, they were living in a basement in a distraught part of Istanbul. With a debt that would take over 50 days to pay - while not spending any money in the meantime - They seemed to be destined for a constant servitude to the past. Emergency funds were provided to forgive their debt and they began on a new path. Over the last several months, they have begun and grown their own venture called A Clean Start, which is an in home cleaning service. They are now servicing five clients on the regular and supplementing their regular wages to the point that their venture is now more profitable.

We are very proud of the warmth of so many in supporting this venture. As we have expanded our customer base we have also been able to employ more people and are looking to expanding our services to other areas of hospitality. We are also looking into internal investment to take the service from amateur to professional with an initial business investment in uniforms, business cards and other tools to grow.

At Genesus we are not only organising clientele, scheduling and other administration, but teaching the tools for A Clean Start's independent operation.
